Dolls are a deep collecting field, from 19th-century bisque dolls to mid-century plastic fashion dolls. Identification usually starts at the back of the neck.
Identify the material
- Bisque: unglazed porcelain, matte finish — classic antique dolls, many from Germany and France
- China heads: glazed porcelain heads, often on cloth bodies
- Composition: a mixture of sawdust, glue and other materials, common in the early 20th century; prone to crazing
- Hard plastic: mid-20th century
- Vinyl: later 20th century
Find the marks
Look on the back of the head or neck, the shoulders, and the body. Marks may include maker names or initials, mold numbers, size numbers and country of origin. Doll reference books decode them.
What affects value
- Maker and mold: certain makers and molds are highly sought after
- Face: quality of painting; eyes (sleep eyes, glass eyes)
- Original condition: wig, clothing, shoes and box
- Damage: cracks or chips on bisque heads, crazing on composition, missing fingers
Original clothing matters
Collectors prize original outfits and accessories. Don't wash or alter old clothing without advice.
Reproductions
Reproduction bisque dolls have been made in large numbers, sometimes with copied marks. Clues include new-looking bodies, overly smooth bisque and modern materials.
Storage and care
Keep dolls out of direct sunlight, away from humidity and in stable temperatures. Don't store in sealed plastic for long periods.
