Silver dollars are among the most collected US coins, and they turn up in inheritances all the time. Every genuine Morgan or Peace dollar is worth at least its silver content — and some dates are worth far more.
Morgan and Peace dollars
- Morgan dollars were struck 1878–1904 and again in 1921 (plus modern commemorative issues). Liberty head on the front, eagle with wings spread on the back.
- Peace dollars were struck 1921–1935. Liberty with a radiate crown; an eagle perched on the back with "PEACE".
Both are 90% silver and contain roughly three-quarters of a troy ounce of pure silver.
The value floor: silver content
Even a worn common-date silver dollar is worth at least its "melt value", which moves with the silver price. Check the current spot price to know your baseline.
What pushes value higher
Date and mint mark
Morgan dollars were struck at Philadelphia (no mark), New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S), Carson City (CC) and Denver (D, 1921 only). The mint mark is on the reverse, below the wreath. Carson City dollars are especially popular. Certain dates — such as the 1893-S and 1895 — are famous rarities. See coin mint marks.
Condition
Uncirculated coins with full luster sell for multiples of worn examples. Look at Liberty's hair above the ear and the eagle's breast feathers — these wear first.
Strike and eye appeal
Well-struck coins, attractive toning and prooflike (mirror) fields can add premiums.
Watch out for fakes
Silver dollars are among the most counterfeited coins. Warning signs: wrong weight, magnetic attraction (silver isn't magnetic), mushy details, and rare dates at bargain prices. Buy valuable dates certified by a reputable grading service.
How to value yours
- Confirm it's genuine (weight, magnet, details).
- Identify the date and mint mark.
- Judge wear honestly.
- Look up sold prices for that date, mint and grade.
- For key dates, get professional grading.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a Morgan silver dollar worth?
At least its silver value. Common dates in circulated condition often trade modestly above melt; rare dates and high grades can be worth much more.
Where is the mint mark on a Morgan dollar?
On the reverse, below the wreath and above "DOLLAR".
Should I clean a silver dollar?
No. Cleaning ruins the surface and lowers value.
