Old Stamps Worth Money: How to Tell If Your Stamps Are Valuable

Are your old stamps worth money? Check age, rarity, condition, centering, gum, perforations and errors, and learn how to value a stamp collection.

Stamp albums are a classic attic find. Most stamps, even old ones, were printed in huge numbers and are worth little individually. But condition and a few specific factors separate the common from the valuable — and some collections hide real gems.

What makes a stamp valuable

Rarity

How many were printed, and how many survive. Early classics (19th century), short-lived issues, and stamps from small territories tend to be scarcer.

Condition

Collectors are demanding. Check:

  • Centering: is the design evenly placed within the margins?
  • Perforations: are all the "teeth" intact?
  • Gum (for unused stamps): original, undisturbed gum adds value; hinge marks reduce it.
  • Color: bright and unfaded
  • Faults: thins, tears, creases, stains

Used vs. unused

Sometimes unused (mint) is worth more, sometimes a neat, clear postmark is. It depends on the issue.

Errors and varieties

Inverted centers, missing colors, imperforate stamps and printing errors can be extremely valuable — and are faked.

Postal history

Stamps on original envelopes ("covers") with interesting routes or postmarks can be worth more than the stamps alone.

Signs a collection might be worth a look

  • Stamps from the 1800s or early 1900s
  • Full sheets or blocks
  • Covers with unusual postmarks
  • Specialist albums with careful organization
  • Stamps from small countries or colonies

Signs it's probably low value

  • Mostly modern, common, used stamps torn from envelopes
  • Packets of mixed "world stamps"
  • Heavily hinged, faded or damaged stamps

How to value stamps

  1. Sort by country and approximate era.
  2. Identify each stamp using a catalog (Scott, Stanley Gibbons, Michel and others).
  3. Assess condition carefully under good light and magnification.
  4. Check sold prices, not catalog values — catalog values are often higher than real sale prices.

Handling and storage

Use stamp tongs, not fingers. Store in acid-free albums away from light and humidity. Don't soak stamps off envelopes until you're sure the cover isn't more valuable intact.

Frequently asked questions

Are old stamps worth anything?

Most are worth little individually, but rare issues, fine condition and errors can be valuable. Collections are often sold by weight or lot.

How do I find out what my stamps are worth?

Identify each stamp with a catalog or app, judge its condition, and compare recent sold prices.

Is it better to sell a stamp collection whole or in parts?

Valuable stamps are usually sold individually; the rest as a lot. Get the collection assessed first.
